What is Merchant Navy?

Merchant navy is the name given by King George V during world war I to the merchant shipping fleets serving the British navy not with weapons but with food and other materials of survival.
Earlier Merchant Navy was known as merchant shipping or Merchant Marine.
It mainly deals with transportation of raw oil and many other trading item through sea. The types of vessels it includes cruise ship,  passenger vessels, cargo liners, tankers, bulk carrier, container as well as special type of vessels.
Merchant navy is the back bone of international trade.
